Memahami Nouns (Kata Benda) dalam Kalimat Bahasa Inggris Beserta Latihan

Nouns (kata benda) merupakan kata-kata yang mengacu pada nama orang, tempat, benda, kualitas, aktivitas, konsep, atau kondisi. Nouns berperan sebagai subject, object atau complement dalam kalimat. 

Perhatikan kalimat berikut: 

• Many students study vocabulary by repeating the words. (sebagi orang/person)
• Lima is the capital of Peru. (sebagai tempat/place)
• The committee gathered around the conference table. (sebagai benda/things) 
• A thing of a beauty is a joy forever. (sebagai kualitas/quality)
  
• Islam is one of the major world religions (sebagai konsep/kondisi). 
• Fishing had become a major sport. (sebagai aktifitas/activity)
  

Beberapa nouns ditandai dengan penggunaan huruf kapital seperti Holly Book, Public Library, Indonesia, Muhammad, dan Batusangkar yang disebut dengan proper nouns. Sementara kata-kata seperti library, book, word, picture, dan sentence disebut common nouns kecuali di awal kalimat.

Exercise: Underline all nouns in the following sentences.  Do as examples. 

• Utamaro was one of the greatest artists of Japan.
• The college gas graduated many noted scholars.
  

1. Harpo Marx was a beloved comedian. 
2. The sky seemed to be full of parachutes. 
3. Bill wore a tweet coat that once belonged of his father. 
4. The boring speech lasted nearly one hour. 
5. His hotel was near the casino. 
6. Love makes the word go round.
   
7. The cleaning fluid did not take out the stain. 
8. Lois found that no one would offer her a set. 
9. Bridge is not my cup of tea. 
10. Planning seems to take all my time.
    

Exercise: Underline nouns and mention whether they are place, object, feeling/idea, activity, or quality. Do as examples. 

• The dentist check his patient tooth. (person)
  
• The sky seemed to be full of parachutes. (place)

1. Geometry is the study of shapes and configuration.
2. The car is old and parked in the yard. 
   
3. Happiness is the best feeling.
4. The boring speech lasted nearly one hour.
5. The first mathematics textbooks were written in English in 1540. 
6. Allied Armies invaded Normandy in 1944.  
7. Writing is an art too often neglected. 
8. I admire her childlike innocence. 
9. A beach is unsurpassed for relaxation. 
10. The actor portraying Tarzan has a simple task.

Exercise: Complete the following sentences with correct form of nouns in parentheses.  Do as examples. 

• Mama and I will go to the ........... next month. (lake or Lake) 
• Aunt Jo went to ........... for the weekend. (lake placid, Lake placid or Lake Placid) 

1. We live near the ........... (city or City)
2. My ........... gave us a homework assignment.(teacher or Teacher)
3. Is ........... a strict teacher?(Mr. brown or Mr. Brown)
4. My dog, ........... likes to play fetch with a tennis ball.(buster or Buster)
5. At the zoo, we saw a gorilla named ............ . (grumpy or Grumpy)
6. That girl lives on ........... .(adam street, Adam street, or Adam Street) 
7. Dad's birthday is in  ........... .(january or January) 
8. The football bounced off the statue of  ........... . (Hamilton/hamilton)
9. The messenger gave ........... an envelope. (Juan/juan)
10. Christianity is the ........... of many Europeans. (religion/Religion)
